“LOVING AS HE LOVED”

THE LETTER TO PHILEMON

This is a sermon series delivered at our church on Sunday mornings in the Summer of 2025 that goes verse-by-verse through the New Testament Letter to Philemon. The Letter to Philemon is the shortest letter of the Apostle Paul and is a letter written to one of his friends that he led to Christ, Philemon. It seems that Philemon played a large role in housing the church of Colossae and was a wealthy estate owner that God used for His glory. Philemon had a runaway slave named Onesimus who, in God’s providence, encountered the Apostle Paul during one of his imprisonments. Paul was able to lead him to Christ and the character of Onesimus was transformed in his newfound salvation. Paul wrote to Philemon for Philemon to receive his former slave back into his house as a brother in Christ. Philemon’s name means “loving.” What Paul asks of Philemon in the letter bearing his name is a beautiful picture of the love of Christ through the gospel lived out in an everyday life situation. The Letter to Philemon serves to teach us what it is to love as Christ loves, care as Christ cares, forgive as Christ forgives, and receive as Christ receives.

Philemon 15-16 – “For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever; Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?”
