This is a sermon series delivered at our church on Sunday mornings in the Winter of 2025-2026 and the Spring and Summer of 2026 that follows God’s working in the life of an important biblical figure, King David. David is marked out in Scripture as a man chosen by God to be king over Israel as “a man after His own heart” (1 Samuel 13:14). What does it mean to be a man after God’s own heart? Through the life of David depicted in Scripture, we learn that are pointed forward in time to the Son of David who perfectly modeled what it is to be after God’s own heart, the Lord Jesus Christ. Through the ups, downs, victories, and defeats of David’s life, you and I are reminded of our weakness, God’s strength, our limited knowledge, God’s perfect wisdom, our sinfulness, and God’s goodness. While David was a king of Israel who followed the Lord, his life points us forward to the true King of kings and Lord of lords (Revelation 19:16) to whom we all must subject ourselves.
“But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.” – 1 Samuel 16:7
“And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.” – 2 Samuel 7:16
