This is a sermon series delivered at our church on Sunday mornings in the Winter and early Spring of 2025 that goes verse-by-verse through the Old Testament Book of Nehemiah. This book gives the record of a man named Nehemiah, a Jewish man who served as the cupbearer for the king of Persia. His people had been in captivity for decades under Persian rule and Ezra had recently led the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem under the commission of Cyrus the Great. Nehemiah received word that Jerusalem was unprotected with no wall and was burdened by God to see this task accomplished. Through Nehemiah God led the rebuilding of the wall in Jerusalem and the re-establishment of worship in Israel followed. The events of the book and the leadership of Nehemiah serve as a very applicable illustration of what it means to participate in God’s work in the world, to cooperate in His mission, and see His will accomplished in the lives of others. It is a book that serves to point His people to the work of Jesus Christ in the Church as He builds a people who are a temple fit for His presence (Ephesians 2:19-22). Nehemiah has much to teach us about what it means to do “God’s Work, God’s Way.”
Nehemiah 4:6 – “So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.”
